Liner Lock Knives – A History of This Versatile Knife Style
Apr 19th
When knives first began to appear as pocket knives, they were developed so that they could virtually fold in half and be able to ride in a secure, hidden location. When the knives were opened, it was usually done with a thumb or another finger, which meant that a person would have to use two hands in order to open up his knife. This is something that worked for many people, but could also be dangerous in the long run.
This is part of why liner lock knives were developed. With these knives, it is possible to open and close the blade with only one hand in a safe manner. The knife was designed by Michael Walker who took what was at one time called the electrician’s knife, and made some adjustments to it. The electrician’s knife had a button which, when pressed, would open and close. However, it did not lock. Walker changed the older style so that it would lock, which meant a safer sturdier blade.
The liner lock knives that can be found in hunting and fishing equipment stores today are commonly referred to as folding knives. When it is unfolded, it is held open by a leaf spring or lockbar system. The lockbar presses against the bottom of the blade and does not allow it to close until the lockbar is pressed. Then, it closes by itself. It will stay closed until the lockbar is pressed one more time.
This type of hunting knife is useful because it allows you to safely keep your knife closed when not in use, ensuring that no accident occurs. This mechanism creates a way to keep a knife in the house or in a tackle box without worrying about the safety of other people that may be digging in drawers or boxes to retrieve it. The liner lock knife also works to lock the knife open, so that you will not have to worry about the sharp edge falling shut accidentally on unsuspecting fingers or constantly collapsing while you are trying to complete a task.
The liner lock knife also allows you to open and close the blade with one hand. This makes the entire unit much easier and convenient to use. These blades are also made of strong materials, typically steel or titanium, to better withstand rigorous use and the constant movement of the internal mechanism. These materials can also withstand rust and tend to maintain their sharpness better than other metals. With this type of construction, it is reassuring to users that the knife will last.
Whether for outdoor use or for your home, having a solid folding knife at your disposal is important. If you do not have one, consider a liner lock knife for its safety, ease-of-use and durability.

Benchmade Blackwood Skirmish Folding Knife Review
Apr 5th
The Blackwood Skirmish by Benchmade combines rugged toughness with an attractive design to make a pocket knife that you’ll be glad to have by your side. I was lucky enough to get a Blackwood Skirmish of my own recently and here are my thoughts:
What I like about the knife:
1. At 4.30 inches long, the modified drop point style blade is crafted from S30V steel. S30v is great steel that gives you high carbon-like edge retention with the rust and corrosion resistance of stainless steel.
2. Benchmade’s Monolock is one of the strongest locks on the knife market today. It comes as no surprise that they would use this lock in one of their best folders. When in the locked position, my Skirmish has no movement from side to side or up and down.
3. The super tough-titanium handle not only looks cool, but feels comfortable in your hand. Benchmade has integrated grooves that both protect your finger from slipping unto the blade and help with the overall feel.
4. Jimping or thumb grooves on the spine of the blade help you to make razor thin slices, or tear through something in a hurry.
5. One handed opening should be no problem with the Blackwood Skirmish. Just flick the ambidextrous thumb hole and watch your blade fly into the locking position.
What I didn’t like:
I wish that the Blackwood Skirmish was available with an ambidextrous pocket Clip.
Total:
I recommend the Benchmade Blackwood Skirmish for anyone who needs a knife really hard work or utility model. Combining great steel, a hard block, sturdy handle and impeccable attention to detail and you get the skirmish Blackwood.
Slice of History – A Retrospective Knife
Mar 18th
The first knives were probably made of wood, bone and other perishable materials. These ancient tools were shaped by knapping, or percussive flaking of rock, such as obsidian and flint.
As there has been progress in the field of metallurgy, are materials such as wood, stone and bone knives gradually replaced by copper, bronze, iron, and finally steel. In the Middle Ages, the knife, fork and spoon changed pieces of cutlery in circulation in the western world. Consequently, much ofThe world population has been exposed to every day a knife as a tool and tools.
Knives are now available in different shapes and sizes, but can be of two types: fixed and folding knives or pocket knives are divided into categories. Blades may be serrated or plain, or even a combination of both. Some knives contain Tang, a part of the blade that extends into the handle.
Fixed knife
Unlike its earlier predecessors blades can today by a variety of materials, each of them producedwith their advantages and disadvantages. An alloy of carbon and iron, carbon steel is very strong and is easy to sharpen, but is susceptible to rust and stains. An alloy of iron, chromium, nickel and molybdenum, stainless steel is not capable of an edge as strong as carbon steel, but it takes very resistant to corrosion. If the best properties of carbon steel and stainless steel combine, are high-carbon stainless steel blades can get a sharp edge and will not fade orStain.
Sheets are more difficult to laminate a layer of steel brittle, between an outer layer of softer, tougher steel blocked to reduce the likelihood of corrosion is created. Pattern-welding is another technique similar to the construction, different types of rolled steel sheets and tubes, but then the title is manipulated to create the steel models. A lighter, resistant metal, titanium is more flexible than steel, but is not as strong as a board to take. However, carbides in titanium alloy, which will allow them to heat, for the treatment of a hardness sufficient. Largely immune to corrosion, ceramic blades are very hard and get light meters, capable of cutting edge for a year at a time, with little or no maintenance. Ceramic blades can be sharpened only on silicon carbide sandpaper and some grinding wheels.
Forging and stock removal
Steel blades are commonly shaped by forging or stock removal. Blades are forged by heating a single piece ofSteel and shaping the metal, while with a hammer or a hot press. Removal blades are shaped by grinding metal removal. After shaping, with both methods must be heat-treated blade, heating steel above the critical point is the knife and then goes out to harden. Once it is hardened, and tempered to eliminate tensions and strengthen the blade. Forging tends to be used several lines of high-end cutlery.
Jackknife
Connected to the handleby a pin, s is the knife blade that can fold into the handle. Pocket knives usually created with a block to prevent the blade accidentally closing the user's hand.
Found most commonly on traditional pocket knives, a slip joint holds the blade open rather than allowing a spring-loaded device that bends the blade, when a certain amount of pressure is exerted. A lock-jaw includes a stop pin connected to a spring and can only be solvedpressing the lever down to release the blade. Other types of locks most popular features include: liner lock, frame-lock, keypad lock, and the axis of the block.

Beating the Night – The History of Night Vision
Feb 24th
The night has always had a mysterious and eerie aura to it, due to the darkness that it accompanies. Through time, the dark has always been something that a lot of people fear. As they say, you never know what lurks in the dark. However, as technology developed, the night has become less of a scary monster and even became a sought after period of the day, all thanks to the invention of the night vision. If you’re wondering how this innovation started in the first place, read on and learn the history of night vision.
The Art Of War And Seeing In The Dark
It has always been a point that man had to dominate his enemies but at the same time making little damage as he can. In the beginning, men fought at daytime since night raids were considered to be very dangerous. They were and virtually impossible back then. With some time, men realized that surprising their enemies with attacks were much effective and could be very devastating on their enemies’ side. This was the situation when torches became a hit, especially in the Middle Ages. If a torch can last longer, the better. However, brilliant may torches seem, it gave one big problem- it revealed the position of the attacker.
Making Things On Stealth Mode
This problem was answered during the 1940’s on the midst of World War II, by the innovation of night vision. At first, it was only sniper riffles that had this technology, so that they would have the ability to foresee enemies even from a distance. The use of this gave a dramatic effect on the whole war’s course. Ever since the Germans have found its usefulness, they have begun developing innovative technology so that they can successfully dominate even the night.
The Goggle Appearance
It was during the 1960’s Vietnam Era, when military troops began developing night vision technology. It was this time when the night vision goggles first came out and promoted. There was a remarkable advantage seen on those military divisions that has night vision goggles compared to those that did not have them. This became the reason why the government along with the military pushed on with further research about the said technology.
Owning The Night
It was during the 1990’s when such technological improvements have had the opportunity to be finally tested. It was used in the Gulf War. In general, it gave a dramatic effect, which led to the saying that the American troops “Own the Night”. This saying was very much for real, whether it be defensive or attach manoeuvres.
Recent Use
In terms of war, the technology was also used in the war against Iraq. It has proved to be an extremely excellent tool, especially for defensive purposes and guarding against the militia. The advantage is also present for thermal vision. Nonetheless, they can get the best of both worlds by combining both thermal and night vision. Doing this gives overwhelming power over the night.
For Public Use
Nowadays, night vision technology is widely available even to the public. Most likely, equipments with this feature are used by hunters since it is undeniably a reliable way for them to detect animals even during night time. There are also other uses of the technology as it is now applied on video cameras, spy cameras and surveillance cameras.
