It is simply not fun when the lights go out or the car breaks down in the middle of the night. There’s no reason to laugh when you are lost on the trail or stuck in a room with coughing people. It’s no joke when you don’t have water or first aid supplies and you have no way to summon help.
Fortunately, you can prepare for emergencies and disasters. According to Homeland Security a basic emergency kit should include one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days and at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Include a can opener to open tinned food. You’ll need a flashlight and battery-powered radio and extra batteries for both. Include a first aid kit and a whistle to signal for help. A dust mask will help filter contaminated air and moist towelettes and garbage bags will help with sanitation. Bring your cell phone and charger. Throw in local maps and a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
Homeland Security suggests aiding a few more items to your kit. Include matches in a waterproof container, warm bedding for each person in your group, important family documents, a fire extinguisher, and money. If you include household chlorine bleach and a medicine dropper, you have both a disinfectant and a way to treat water.
Be sure to bring any prescription medications, glasses, and medical supplies. Of course you will need food and water and a mess kit. Paper and pencil and books, games, and puzzles will help you pass the time.
You can pull all the essentials together or purchase an emergency kit and add your own personal extras. How to Build and Start a Campfire Simply

One of the enjoyable activities any camper wants to do when camping is to build a campfire. It just seems it is not camping without a campfire. Following are some tips for not only building a fire; but, also some safety reminders for a safe and enjoyable campfire.
First, always be sure campfires are permitted in the site or area in which you are camping. Depending upon season and local fire ordinances, fires may not be permitted.
Second, if you are allowed to have an open fire, be sure it is in a fire-pit. Many campgrounds already have fire-pits available at campsites. If you are primitive camping, you can build your own fire-pit. The best way to do this is by using rocks within the general area. Chances are a fire-pit has already been built by a previous camper.
Obviously, dry wood and kindling is a must. If you do not have access to dry wood, most campgrounds have it in stock for a small fee.
Beware of the weather conditions, windy nights can play havoc in not only starting a fire but may cause damage to camping equipment, and not just yours. Common sense is a must here, if in doubt, play it safe.
Starting a fire is always the toughest part of a good campfire. Here is a fire starter that is compact and basically free. You probably have the ingredients around the house now. Very simply, you need a paper egg carton, crayons with the paper left on, and a container to melt the crayons in. Free crayons are easy to come by without purchasing. Your children or grandchildren have them lying around and they are always getting new boxes, use the old ones.
What, no children or grandchildren? If you know a preschool or elementary teacher, prevail on them to donate crayons as the end of the school year. Break up the crayons into a metal container, such as a coffee can, and heat until melted. You can do this on your gas grill, just leave the lid up. Once melted, pour into the egg carton. You now have 12 fire starters.
In your fire-pit, place your fire starter, “tepee” your kindling over the fire starter. Lite the fire starter. Caution, always light up-wind so you don’t burn yourself. After the kindling is burning you can now add the larger wood.
Remember, safety is a must. Never leave an open fire unattended. Always assist little campers when cooking their hot dogs or smores.

Using a Fishing Knife to Fish

When I was growing up being surrounded by three older brothers was usually a good thing. Every now and then being the “smallest one” had it’s disadvantages, but usually it was an advantage. When my brothers took me fishing with them it was one of the best times in my life. We lived along the Delaware River so this was one of our favorite places to go. With the help of a couple of good fishing knives it was amazing some of the things we were able to do. When we went fishing we always had all kinds of pocket knives, fixed bladed knives and even a Swiss Army knife.
As there were four boys in our family we pretty much shared everything. Clothing, school books, fishing equipment and mostly everything else. We also shared one tackle box. One thing we each had was a fishing knife or at least some kind of knife. Pocket knives were carried by each of us because that was always a gift for each of us for birthdays and such. We really didn’t have much of a tackle box or for that matter enough rods and reels to go around. We never used lures and mostly used worms for bait. Every now and then dad would make up a batch of corn meal and that was used along with the worms.
Since we usually only had one or two rods and reels, my brothers were very creative in making “homemade rigs.” Finding a good bamboo stick along the river then was never a problem because they grew all over the place. Somewhere in that old tackle box was one of those multi-purpose knives that had a blade and a saw attachment. That would be used to saw the bamboo down and to make it the right length. A pretty good length was about 8 feet. Then with a good sharp fixed bladed fishing knife we would trim everything off of the bamboo. At the very tip on the narrow end using a small, but sharp pocket knife we would cut a circle embedded into the bamboo. Within this we would wrap tightly a piece of wire creating an eye hook. From this eye hook you could easily attach your line. You would be amazed how well this would work. There really wasn’t a big premium for casting.
Back then (40 years ago) the river was still wide open and assessable and not paved over with shipping docks, warehouses and loading piers. There were a lot of little streams that could be fished into also. Catfish, carp, sunnies and yes even an occasional bass could be caught. But to me it didn’t matter because we never kept a single fish. We were only there for the fun of catching them. Even today people still go to the river everyday to go fishing. I can’t recall seeing any of them using a bamboo rod. It was, as I said one of the best times of my life.

No one wants to go on a camping trip, only to find out that something important was, left at home, like a part of the tent for instance. There are certain items that need to be on your survival list, like flashlights for when it gets dark. This way you do not step on something that can injure you. You need your tent and all its accessories, for if your tent is missing any parts. You will not be able to put it up and protect your family from any elements of weather.
In addition, you need to make sure you have enough room for sleeping mats, pillows, blankets and sleeping bags. Now back in the cowboy day’s men sleep on the ground, but people today just do not do that. However, if one of the family members forgets their sleeping mat or sleeping bag: then they may have to sleep on the ground for just a night, and that can be painful.
Moreover when planning a family camping trip you will need to bring along fishing poles and tackle, emergency food just in case you do not catch any fish. Be sure to bring a couple of knives and a gun along, for any unwanted animals approaching your campsite. You will also need a big Ice Cooler to put fish in, or drinks and emergency food as well.
In addition, some campsites do not provide showers and bathrooms, so therefore, take a portable shower and toilet with you, and be, sure to have plenty of toilet paper. Never use any kind of leaves when using the restroom in the woods.
